A number of YMA members have gone on to serve in key positions of Arlington's city government in many roles - mayor, city councilman, chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the list goes on. Several have played important positions in development of Arlington's school system or influenced the growth of Arlington through private business. In fact, many of those young leaders' names are closely associated with successes that have shaped our community over the past three plus decades. Mayor Richard Greene, Tom Cravens, Jim Maibach, Ralph Shelton, Bart Thompson, and Kent Grusendorf, all alumni of YMA, have played key roles in the growth of our city, including such achievements as The Ballpark and surrounding developments, River Legacy Park and ongoing revitalization efforts of downtown Arlington. While this rich tradition has certainly provided a solid foundation for YMA, the group continues to play an active role in the development and growth of Arlington as it enters the 21st century. In fact, the mission of YMA has not changed from the original statement that was drafted back in 1968:

The purpose of YOUNG MEN FOR ARLINGTON is:
To be an independent, informed group of young men who will actively initiate
and/or support any program or person which the organization believes will
result in the improvement of Arlington.
To promote the strengthening of our representative
government by encouraging our citizens to take a more active and effective
part in political affairs.
To encourage our citizens to understand the nature and
actions of their government, the important political issues, and the record of
officeholders and candidates.
To assist our citizens in organizing themselves for more
effective political action and in carrying out their civic responsibilities.
