Annual Candidates’ Forum

Each spring, YMA hosts its Candidates’ Forum for city government and school board elections.  This is the longest continuous-running forum in Arlington, going back to the first years of YMA’s founding.  During the event, each of the candidates are asked a series of questions relating to current events and issues facing the city and school district and are given opportunities to provide their position on such issues.  YMA membership then holds a post-forum meeting to vote to endorse a candidate for each position.

The event is well covered by the media – including television as well as newspaper coverage.  Furthermore, the YMA Candidates’ Forum is earnestly regarded by candidates as one of the (if not the most) important functions to participate in during the election process.  The Candidates’ Forum has been linked to YMA since its inception and continues to be highly influential in Arlington’s election process.  It is one of two major events that YMA carries out each year and allows the membership to play an active role in the election process

Annual Gala Benefiting The Women’s Shelter of Arlington

The second major event which is led by YMA is our annual Gala.  Since 1996, YMA has held the Gala benefiting The Women’s Shelter of Arlington.   This event was conceived in order to achieve two main goals:

F      Raise awareness of the valuable service The Women's Shelter of Arlington is doing for our community.

F  Recognize the importance of leadership in Arlington.

The event centers on The Women’s Shelter as well as the presentation of two leadership awards.  The Tom Vandergriff Leadership Award is presented to a younger member of the community displaying outstanding leadership and initiative.  The Richard Greene Community Service Award is presented to a citizen that has spent many years contributing to the growth and development of Arlington.  Funds that are donated to The Women’s Shelter come from corporate sponsorships as well as from silent and live auctions.  Each year, proceeds donated to The Women’s Shelter have grown, up to nearly $15,000 for 2002.  Our previous keynote speakers have included Tom Vandergriff, Jim Sundberg, and Roger Staubach.  The Gala gives members an excellent opportunity to put into action the goals of YMA and it continues to be a highly successful demonstration of the value of community involvement.

How can I get involved?
